About This Template

Why this Nara board feels complete

Build a 3-day Nara trip around the Great Buddha of Todai-ji, the deer-filled meadows of Nara Park, and a morning excursion to Horyu-ji's ancient wooden halls. Day 1 covers the UNESCO temple core within walking distance of Kintetsu Nara Station. Day 2 slows down with the garden circuit and Naramachi's old merchant lanes. Day 3 pairs a half-day trip to Ikaruga with a sunset hike up Mt Wakakusa. Cherry blossoms frame the temple grounds from late March through mid-April, and November brings crimson foliage along the shrine approach paths.

The Great Buddha statue inside Todai-ji Temple's main hall in Nara
Must visit

Todai-ji Temple

A 15-meter bronze Buddha fills the largest wooden building in the world, and it is the centerpiece of any Nara visit. Try squeezing through the hole in the rear pillar for good luck, and come on a weekday to avoid school-group crowds.

Free-roaming deer standing beneath cherry trees in Nara Park
Must visit

Nara Park

Over 1,000 deer wander freely across open parkland between temples and cherry trees. Buy deer crackers from vendors with cash, let the deer bow, and arrive early morning for the best light and fewer people.

Stone lanterns lining the forested path to Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara
Must visit

Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Hundreds of moss-covered stone and bronze lanterns line the forested path up to a vermillion main hall. Walk the approach in the afternoon when light filters through the canopy, and visit during opening hours to also access the botanical garden.

Traditional machiya townhouses along a narrow lane in Naramachi District Nara
Must visit

Naramachi District

A preserved Edo-period merchant quarter with narrow lanes, traditional machiya townhouses, and small craft shops. You can walk the whole district in about an hour. Stop for kakinoha-zushi at a local cafe along the way.

The five-story pagoda at Horyu-ji Temple in Ikaruga near Nara
Must visit

Horyu-ji Temple

The oldest surviving wooden structures in the world, founded in 607 AD, sit in Ikaruga a short train ride from central Nara. Take the JR Yamatoji Line to Horyu-ji Station and walk 20 minutes to the grounds. Book a guided tour in advance to get the most out of the visit.

Panoramic sunset view over Nara city and temples from the summit of Mt Wakakusa
Must visit

Mt Wakakusa

A grassy hill behind the deer park with a 30-minute hike to panoramic views over Nara's temples and the city beyond. Time your visit for sunset. The 150-yen entry is worth it for the light alone.

  • Walk between Kofuku-ji, Todai-ji, and Kasuga Taisha instead of taking buses. The whole temple core is within a 15-minute walking radius.
  • Arrive at Kintetsu Nara Station rather than JR Nara Station. It puts you closer to the temples and saves a connecting bus ride.
  • Visit Yoshikien Garden next to Todai-ji for free entry instead of paying at Isuien Garden if you only have time for one.
